5(UPDATED Dec 19, 2016) SOLID DVD/CD RW Drive, USB 2.0 (NOT 3.0!), Reliable, Perfect For Notebook/Server w/o DVD
By Stephanie Sullivan
Review Updated 19 Dec. 2016

I like the Dell DW316 External USB DVD+-RW drive. It is perfect for laptops or any computer without a working internal optical drive. It is a nicer than average USB 2.0 DVD+-RW drive in an above average package. The DW316 comes with Cyber Link Media Suite to facilitate reading/burning CD/DVD media and playing DVD movies on PC's (A nice add-on). It also works perfectly on Mac laptops.

I like Dell products. I've used them in the past and I feel confident in the brand. Is this worth more than a SAMSUNG TSST SE-218GN/RSBD drive that's a little thicker but otherwise similar? For people who want an all Dell environment, yeah! Definitely.

The DW316 it has a single USB connection unlike some older technology USB 2.0 burners which require 2 for enough power. The newer design of the DW316 has better power efficiency than those older drives.

Physically it's just about 5 and a half inches on a side, just over half an inch thick and less than half a pound. As an optical drive for ultrabooks or tablets it's not a lot more to carry wither in weight or bulk.

Of course the drive burns/reads pretty much any CD or DVD format disk. As quick as any USB drive I've used and works on both PC and Mac's.

My use of the DW316 is mostly with servers or desktop computers that have no optical drives like the Intel NUC. I boot off a Linux DVD in the DW316 to install Centos 7. It works perfectly. Same for Windows 7, 8, 10, Server 2008 or 2012. With BIOS support for USB drives it works perfectly. That's pretty much every reasonably modern PC.

Conclusions:
For me the Dell DW316 is very nicely made, has been reliable. At the current price (about $33) it is a good value for a quality drive. My clients tend to be very Dell focused so there is a added marketing value for me to carry around a dell brand drive.

I'm giving the DW316 5 stars. When I first got mine the listed price was about 50% more than now. The current price is in line with the quality of this drive. It's been a good drive for me and has worked great.

Hope this helps someone!

I was happily surprised to find that I can use this with both my PC and Mac laptops. I thought I would need to purchase one for each computer.

5this has worked like a charm
By Tasha
Rap far, this has worked like a charm. My laptop doesn't have an optical drive,cd player/burner, so I had to purchase a external one if I wanted to burn/transfer music.
